Erika Knight Dandelion tank from Bloom at Rowan book

Hello there, I’m knitting the front piece of this tank top and I’ve run into a confusing point in the pattern.

So I’ve done my increases on rows 3, 4, 8, and 12, so all of those have been on wrong side rows. Then it says to do one more row in rib, which would to my mind be a RS row, but then it says the next row should be a RS row which doesn’t make sense. Am I missing something? I can do an extra rib row but I don’t want to confuse it if i don’t need to. If i carry on my rib pattern (where at the top of the second picture i start doing 9 sts in rib and then K the rest…) but do the WS as the RS i would end up losing a rib stitch on each side and it wouldn’t match with the back piece if that makes sense.

Any help would be appreciated!! Thank you

The easiest thing to do since you have just finished a WS row is to continue with the directions for the next RS row (the “Rib 9, K to last 9 sts, rib 9”). Skip the “1 row more” direction. Missing one row won’t make much difference in the overall look or fit.

It’s possible that there is a mistake in the wording and the increases were meant to be every 4th row as written for Row 3. That would be rows 7,11 and 15. You could rip back and change the increase rows. That way the last row would be row 15 and the “1 row more” would be the WS row. Then the directions proceed with the RS row on the next page.

Do these directions mirror the directions for the back? Have you worked the back yet and what did you do for increases there?

Thank you very much for this help! So the back piece is worked quite differently, it’s just 40 rows of rib with no increases at the bottom. It’s a maternity vest which isn’t seamed at the sides so i guess i expect more shaping on the front piece.

I’m also confused because as the piece up to row 13 faces me, so id be about to knit row 14 which should be a WS row, the knitting itself actually looks like it should be the RS (based on how the increases look, but not on how the edge curls):

Facing me before i knit row 14.

^ what according to the pattern would be the RS. Maybe it is and the increases are meant to be buried rather than the plait showing. Now as i look at the photos perhaps the second photo does look better for the RS.

I find it difficult to word properly so hopefully that makes sense! Thank you again for your help!

It looks like a very good start. As you say the back shaping or lack of it isn’t going to help here.

You can really pick whichever side you like as the RS so using the second photo is fine, I agree. The increases will make the pattern depart from a strict k1p1 rib. You’ll have 2 knits or 2 purls next to each other for a few rows until the next increase but that’s ok. It’s important that the overall rib pattern stays aligned. Put a marker or loop of yarn into the RS so that it’s easy to see for the following rows.

I’d go with skipping the row before the Rib9, etc and going straight to the next page. That will work and make sense of the pattern in general. It’s a clever, comfortable design and you’ve started well!

Amazing thank you very much for your help! That makes sense, and good idea to add a marker in - save me the extra thinking as i go.

Thank you!

Markers are such good friends. Have fun with it and we’d love to see a photo when you finish!
