I don’t know why this is confusing me so much! If you’re asked to end with the right side facing for the next row, I would have thought that meant you start the next row as a knit row. Isn’t that the right side? My pattern says to end with RS facing for next row, but the first stitch is a purl stitch. Have I got this the wrong way round?!
If a pattern says end with the right side facing for next row, then yes, you should be working on the right side next.
If it says to end with a ws row, then, again, the rs would be facing for the next row.
If it says to end with a rs row, then you’d be working the next row as a ws.
It is confusing.
There could be a mistake in the pattern. If the directions for the next row is really a ws row, then work it as a ws row. You can check what comes after that, too, to make sure that a rs row follows.
Cheers Ingrid! It’s definitely confusing! It says end with the RS facing for next row, and even has (RS) just before the pattern for that row…put the first stitch is purl! The row after that starts with a knit. So, I should definitely make sure I’m starting on a purl side shouldn’t I? And that’s WS isn’t it!!! My heads spinning!
It’s in the latest Rowan Accessories book - the Solar scarf. I can’t find the pattern online, but I’ve found a photo…not totally sure how to upload but here goes. I’ve done all the ribbing and am about to get into the cabling. The pattern says:
Now work in cable patt as folls:
Row 1 (RS): p2, (knit 6, p2) 4 times
Row 2 : k2, (p6, knit 2) 4 times
Row 2: p2, (c6b, p2) 4 times etc.
Yep, from the pic and from what you’ve posted for the confusing part of the pattern, definitely there are two purl stitches between each cable so you do start with 2 p sts on the right side and the cables will be having k sts on the right side and p sts on the wrong side so yer fine hun. If you want, do the first 2 sts and the last 2 sts in garter sts (knit 1st and last 2 sts every row) and then follow the pattern for each row.:knitting:
Start with 2 purl stitches then you’ll have 6 knit (or cable) sts. Then it will have 2 more p sts, and 6 k sts and so on. The row with 6 knit sts is the RS.
yep, just go right ahead and purl the first two stitches there and then knit yer 6 stitches for the cable etc. Just make sure that when you purl your first stitch that the yarn is in the front so you don’t get that funky lookin mess on yer needle.
