I am working on creating a pattern and I knitted a swatch (pic attached). The neckline and bottom are very jagged so I added an i-cord, but when picking up stitches you see where I did this. Any recommendations on adding a different kind of edge? For the sides, I know I can slip the first stitch for an even edge. It appears to slip the first stitch as if to purl after doing some research. Is that correct if the last stitch made is knit or a purl? (The darker coloring in the picture are shadows.) Thank you for any help!
Pretty! What will it be? When I slip the edge stitch, I slip the first as if to purl wyif and knit the last stitch. There are other ways. If I will be seaming an edge I don’t slip the first stitch and often will do the edge as stockinette even if the pattern has the first or last stitch as a purl; I’ll add two stitches for the edges.
There are other edgings but in most cases you would still need to pick up sts. What if you pick up sts in the color of the main body of the pattern? Any irregularities would be less obvious. Then you could work the edge in either a contrast or the same color.
Have you tried grabbing sts directly from the edge rather than pick up and knit?
Here’s another bind off to think about, the double chain bind off.
Making all the row ends in the same stitch can help with a neater pick up, i would try k1 or k2 at the start and end of every right side row to make a cleaner line for picking up at the edge.
Also a much smaller needle for the pick up row can help make it neater then change to the correct needle size for the following row.
I like salmonmac’s tip for picking up in the main fabric colour then switching to the contrast colour, Ill be trying this with my current project i think.
If you also crochet there are lots of nice crochet edges that can be added to knitting. A small picot could be nice.
Your fabric stitch pattern is very effective, i like it.
