Eatern Cast-On

I am attempting my first pair of toe-up socks from this IK. Before I can even begin to make real mistakes, I need help with the cast on. Does anybody have any resources which they found particularly helpful?

Thanks

Is it the Turkish Cast on you’re doing? This is a good explanation.

I just came upon this new-to-me techinque today. Hope it will be of some help to you. http://www.renaissanceyarns.com/Techniques.htm

This is very similiar but with DPNs instead of circulars.

You can do either of these COs on dpns or circulars. Doesn’t matter which, they’ll get the stitches on the needles the same way.

That was interesting. I ususally just weave the yarn in and out of the two needles to start the cast on instead of the way she did it with the working yarn and tail. I’ll have to try that next time and see if it works better.

Yeah, that was pretty cool! I was thinking of trying the IK pattern, but I need to finish the socks I have on the needles now first.

Here is a Knitty article describing several ways of doing toes. I personally have used only the Magic Cast-on and have found it very easy and simple and fits well.

I looked at my IK magazine earlier this month and saw that they alled it “eastern cast on” and thought to myself, “hmm… i wonder why they didn’t call it turkish. it looks like it’s the same thing.”

I think that the eastern/turkish cast on looks harder than it really is. The tuturial that suzeeq posted is the one that i normally refer to when I’ve forgotten how to do it. here is another tutorial.
