:teehee: I’m ready to take the plunge on my first wearable. Does anyone know of a free EASY top down pattern for a sweater, pullover preferred, as I don’t think I’m ready for buttonholes. TIA
I found this one:
Congratulations on your advancement! :cheering: That is exciting, you’ll have to keep us abreast of your progress.
That pattern is most definitely not suitable for a beginner knitter … just a word of warning.
Why top down?
I don’t think I’d be real good at seaming! Think top down would be easier for me. Any suggestions??
If you can follow directions, you can seam. For me the biggest problem with seaming is the lack of desire to do it, hence I will avoid it when possible. Seaming isn’t hard, it’s just not knitting, but at some point that project you want to knit includes seaming, so you learn.
I see you joined the site in 2008, so I imagine you’ve been knitting for awhile. I encourage you to move forward. I did a search on a free knitting pattern site and there are a number of pullovers you can look at:

Ok, I’ve got to ask, why isn’t it suitable for a beginner knitter?
So catlvr, more questions. What sorts of items have you knitted? I know you asked for a free, simple, top down pattern. Is this your first “fitted” project, aside from perhaps hats? One thing that I have read about a top down sweater is that it is easier to fit as you knit, and am wondering if perhaps that is why you are looking at top down construction.
In order to boost your confidence you might read some articles/blog entries pertaining to knitting sweaters such as this:

Reading about common mistakes and how to avoid them is also useful. When you find a pattern you think you might like to try, read it through and any thing that seems confusing, you could come back here and pose questions. And take the time to swatch, very important in a fitted garment.
Happy :knitting: HTH
I did a ravelry search and included up to medium difficulty because I find the ratings to be iffy sometimes. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#craft=knitting&difficulties=4|2|3|1&view=captioned_thumbs&fit=adult&pa=top-down%2Bseamless&sort=popularity&pc=pullover Simple top-down seamless pullovers aren’t difficult and you can try them on as you go.
I linked to the all free knitting page that has this link:

The problem is that it is only available in a child’s site. Apparently this caused an uproar due to the site being patterns “all free”.
That’s cute and definitely worth considering but it’s bottom up - just a head’s up.
Definition if easy?
Any pattern only using stocking stitch, increases, decreases and cast offs. (bind offs).
Not wanting to put you off but go for it. Looks like Grumpy has some neat links.
A sweater knit bottom-up in the round doesn’t require but a wee bit of seaming at the underarm. I’m a big fan of Elizabeth Zimmerman’s recipes in her books (alas, not free, but a good investment for knitters). They’re much like the raglan sweater clareweber found for you, except with EZ’s recipes you need to do the math yourself.
Have fun on your first foray into sweaterland! :woot:
