Double pointed needles

Greetings:
I am using double pointed needles for the first time. I initially started with 5 needles and would like to downsize to 4 needles without leaving any holes. I appreciate any suggestions. Thank You

Pam

The same techniques at the split between needles should work with 4 needles as well as with 5. A slightly firmer touch avoids ladders at the joins. The benefit of 5 needles (4 to hold sts plus one working needle) is that you can hold more sts and there is less tension on the joins.
Are you using metal or bamboo dpns?

Hi
I am using bamboo

This might be helpful. Tighten the second stitch to avoid ladders.

Is there a reason you want to use 4 instead of 5?

I actually find things easier using 5, not so fiddly.
I just finished a hat yesterday. It’s a hat I’ve made a few times, using 4 and 5 needles. Using 5 is definitely better imo.

Or get small circulars. I use 25cm for mitts and 40cm for hats. I only switch to dpns when I have to.

Bamboo are definitely easier to use especially if you tend to be a loose knitter. I caused hilarity in my family when a metal dpn came shooting out of my sts. Bamboo dpns made it all possible.

Have you tried flexi-flips? They aren’t cheap but they are a pleasure to work with.
