Double center-pull yarn balls?

hi all…

i saw this technique (and saved the link but now where is it?!?) last week. being unable to find/remember, is driving me nuts.

how do you wind a double or 2-strand center-pull yarn ball? it’s supposed to be useful for T@AT toe-up socks… or anytime directions say to use 2 balls of the same yarn simultaneously. keeps them from being tangled and from the balls rolling around, etc.

thanks for any help! - X

i haen’t seen that techniqui. Is itsimilar to winding a center pull with a single strand?. I find that if I use two or even more strands of yarn, it’s better to have them wound separately. Inevitably one strand gets ahead of the other and the pull brom the ball becomes uneven.if you try it, let us know how you like it.

yup, both the ends coming out of the middle together. so what would have been the end inside is now really the middle of the whole length, folded in half with the yarn wound around it… in practice, it’s similar to having an off-the-shelf skein and using both the outer and inner ends simultaneously, all in the pursuit of using one skein/cake/etc instead of separate units of yarn. but now i think i hallucinated the whole thing… LOL… can’t find it anywhere! - X

I use Amy’s method to wind center pull balls (no ball winder) and I’ve used to to wind two skeins together for double strand projects. If you change your mind about the yarn or project though it’s a huge pain in the a$$ to rewind or reuse the yarn unless it’s for another double strand project. I mostly just use two skeins now and deal with a few twists every now and then rather than wind together.

Don’t know of a special method, sorry.

no worries. it won’t work for me for any current projects anyway, i just know i saw it last week. it was interesting and might work for others for specific types of projects. if/when i find it again i’ll be sure to post it. - X

When doing 2@time I sometimes have to take out part of one sock or mitten and not the other. I move one of them to different needles as a holder and pull out the bad rounds on the other. If I wound the yarn as one ball where would I rewind the frogged yarn? If it’s a lot just leaving it unwound gets very tangly. If I pay attention to how I’m turning my work I can mostly avoid tangling anyhow. I look at the yarns coming from my work so see which way I need to turn to not twist the yarn. When I forget to do that I just untwist it.

I put 2 balls or skeins into a ziploc bag, so they don’t get tangled up. Sometimes 2 separate ziplocs if the balls are large.
