A friend of mine said “I hate mohair, it’s scratchy”. I personally never wore anything made of mohair but certainly it doesn’t look scratchy to me. I want to get some mohair yarn because I think it’s so fluffy and they would make cute kids wear. Opinions?
I don’t hate it but do find it to be very itcy.
Only mixed with other stuff. It’s not itchy or scratchy, perse, but it’s got this too smoothness that makes it feel weird by itself. Plus it sheds like crazy.
I haven’t ever knit with Mohair but I do have mohair scarf and shrug. It is itchy. I wouldn’t use it for something you want wear against your skin. But I like the pieces I have.
I like mohair it feels soft, looks cosy and it’s warm but I can’t wear it due to allergies.
Wearing a top underneath should help if your sensitive skinned.

I really think a lot depends on the type of mohair. Kid mohair is pretty soft. The Rowan Kidsilk feels really soft (kid mohair and silk), but I have never used it. I am using the Colinette Mohair on a project and it is a bit itchy, but I think will be fine with a shirt under it. It is not shedding.

May I suggest; go to a yarn shop or buy 1 ball and put it next to your skin or make up a swatch. It’s the only way to know.

I don’t like it because I find it makes me itch like crazy and the shedding makes me sneeze! I always think it looks nice but when I get close to it I realise I should be running 10 miles away as fast as I can

Regular mohair is pretty itchy I think although I don’t know whether everyone has that reaction. I have used lace mohairs like Kid Seta which is the same as Kidsilk Haze that are kid mohair/silk blends. They are not as itchy but I still find them a little itchy but not so much that I can’t wear them.
I find it itchy, but maybe it was cheap mohair? :shrug:
I also find it itchy, as I reported in my post on What to Do? Scarf yarn choices. Very bad idea to use mohair for something to be wrapped around your neck.
I also like the look, so have been looking around for alternatives. Good quality angora does not make me itch (like the Peter Rabbit yarn in the same post), and I’m also looking at brushed merino yarn, like Crystal Palace Frappe or Crystal Palace Merino Stripes.
I like the brushed alpaca Suri Dream yarn from KnitPicks…it kinda looks like mohair, but it’s soft.
My first sweater is mohair and it’s itchy, but it’s not bad on my arms, so I would wear a tank top under it if it weren’t too ugly to wear in public. :teehee:
hummm…I am working on a reversible cable scarf for dh and I bouth Nashura’s “julia” to knit it with. I love it but it does seem a little scratch when I hold it up to my neck…which stinks b/c I’ve worked really hard on this scarf and I think it’s beautiful. Julia is 50% wool…25% mohair and 25% alpaca. Just looking at the label I thought it’d knit up soft.
It’s itchy for me, too, even though it looks so dreamy! 
yeah i still knit with it, especially when felting, cuz i like the fuzziness of its felted self. i think it is the generally short fibers that causes it to seem itchy. if the fibers were longer they may not seem that way so much. i would guess it is more of a tickle on the neck than anything.
i do end up with it all over my shirt though when i knit with it.
I always found mohair itchy until I tried JoSharp kid mohair. I made a sweater of it and it really isn’t itchy…it’s not 100% mohair though…80% Kid Mohair, 5% Wool, 15% Polyamide. I also soaked it in water with some fabric softener so that might have helped.
I have 2 mohair tops - they look FABULOUS. They also shed. And I usually wear a lightweight tank underneath or something to keep from itching. They are so cute, and they are so warm and snuggly, that I keep wearing them regardless. Hope that helps…
