Do you know what this means?

(making a dress from bottom, up & coming up to the bottom of a “V” neckline)

The pattern reads as follows:

work 2 rounds garter st on 2 sts mid front
work 2 rounds garter st on 4 sts mid front
work 2 rounds garter st on 6 sts mid front
work 2 rounds garter st on 8 sts mid front

I am new to everything except simple blankets, I don’t understand the “2 sts mid front” part!!

I’ve never done it, but since it’s a V neck I think they mean that the edge of the V will be done in garter stitch.

Do you have a link the the pattern and a name of the pattern? It really helps us when you give that when asking questions.

I think you are to find the mid point of the front of the sweater and then work 2, 4, 6 and 8 sts around that point in garter stitch on the following 4 rows.

----l----

(line up the vertical line above as the computer automatically shifts it all to the left)

It sounds like your V neckline is going to have a border of garter stitch. Soon the directions will tell you to split the front of the dress for the V neck opening. So find the middle of the front of the dress and work 1 st each side of the midline in garter st for 2 rounds, then 2 sts each side for 2 rounds, etc.

When I read further you are all right about the splitting making it a “V”. When you say “work 2 stitches” then “work 4 stitches” etc is that like a K2tog? You are stitching 2 stitches together ?

tried to post the pattern, but since I’m new to the forum I can’t but I did a copy/paste!

NECKLINE: When piece measures approx 65-66-67-68-69-70 cm / 25½”-26”-26 3/8”-26¾”-27 1/8”-27½” (adjust to at least 2 rounds stockinette st after a lace-round) work 2 rounds garter st – see above – on 2 sts mid front (work remaining sts as before), then 2 rounds garter st on 4 sts mid front, then 2 rows garter st on 6 sts mid front and then 2 rounds garter st on 8 sts mid front. Now divide the piece for neck in the middle of the garter sts and continue back and forth on needle from mid front. Continue in M.4 with 4 garter sts each side towards mid front. AT THE SAME TIME dec 1 st each side to shape the neckline – SEE DECREASING TIP-2, on every other row a total of 12-12-13-13-14-14 times and then on every 4th row a total of 6-6-6-6-7-7 times.

To ‘work’ sts, you knit or purl them according to what you should do in pattern. Decreases are specifically mentioned. So ‘work 4 sts’ means to k4 or p4. To do garter st in the round you knit on one round and purl on the next and alternate them.

It’s not allowed to post an entire pattern, but copy and pasting just a few rows so we can help you is fine. On the part you put in, after you’ve done the 8 garter sts in the center front, on the next round you’re going to split the front and will work flat. So work to the front, turn to the ws and k 4 sts, purl the rest to the last 4 and knit them. Turn to the RS and k4, dec, knit around to the last 6 sts, dec and k4.

Keep repeating these 2 rows - purl a WS row except k the first and last 4 sts, knit the RS row with decs inside the first and last 4 sts. Do them until you have 12-12-13-13-14-14 decs, then switch to doing the decs every 4th row instead of every other one and do it that way 6 or 7 times.

THANK YOU! this helped!~
