Do I need to discontinue my design?

Hi, I’m making DH a turtle neck (but not in the round) with raglan sleeves. I decided to make things interesting for both him and me by adding what I call “marriage lines” on either side of the sweater. My problem is that I’m slowing running out of stockinette sts on my decreases and am getting close to have to impede on my design sts. Help! Any advice? Should I end my design before continuing the dec? (I sure don’t want this to be an omen, ie, discontinuing marriage lines…)

Hi, Is this like a gansey sweater? I’ve heard of lines that have something to do with marriage on them. I think.

I’m not exactly sure what you mean by “on either side of the sweater”. Do you mean on the front and the back, in the middle of each side? Or do you possibly mean on the sides of the front and back, so that they will be kind of under the arms (the sides), when you are done?

I may need to see a picture of what you are doing to have a better chance at an answer.

oops, I should’ve given more precisions. Yes the lines run on left and right sides in front piece only. I was hoping to run them all the way up to the shoulder seam, but now i realize it just might be impossible. I had 48 sts in between both sets. Note: the marriage lines resemble a zig zag (combination of knit and purl sts) with a 3 st border on each side of 14 sts rep = total of 17 sts

It sounds like your 17 stitches will all or mostly (depending on the number of decreases) be decreased away to shape the raglan armholes. You could just keep making the zig-zags as you were and just let them sort of do a fade out as you decrease them away. It might look all right if you can figure out how to maintain the pattern as you work the decreases.

Thanks MerigoldinWA! I think I got it! Looking at the layout picture in my book, I’ll have no choice but to make them fade out as you so sharply put it! You’re good! Thanks a bunch!
