I am making Martha Stewert’s Knitted Neck Scarf.Step 7 is asking me to divide the stitches to make a keyhole. I passed half of the stitches to the dkn needle . Now it wants me to knit stitches from the straight needle but my yarn is at the bottom of the dpn . What am I doing wrong? Thank you for any help.

I think what you’ve done is knit the stitches on to the dpn, when actually you should be slipping them over, leaving the yarn on your working needle.
I’m a beginner and no expert, and I’m sure someone with more experience will be able to help you better!
Thank you for your help. I did slip the stitches to the dpn but the yarn goes with the first stitch to the bottom of the dpn so then I can’t knit the stitches on the straight needle. I know there must be a simple explanation but my senior brain is confused. . I have done some knitting but never with dpn. Thank you for your help. Take care.
That could certainly by the problem but you’re going to knit one half the sts, then break the yarn and attach a new end to the other half and knit that second half. Since you’ll eventually knit each half start with the sts that have the yarn attached to them, the ones on the dpn.
Thank you so much. That makes sense . So I did that but then I messed up transferring stitches to the stitch holder. So I will start over and try again. I am new to using dpn so hopefully practice makes perfect. Fingers crossed. Again, thank you. Enjoy your day.
