Dishcloth pattern

Ok, I printed out my pattern for my dishcloth and I am reading it. Ok.

Cast on 4 stitches (I got that)
Row 1 is - knit 4 (I got that)
Row 2 is - Knit 2, yarn over, knit across row (what is yarn over?)
repeat row 2 until you have 44 stitches on the needle (so after I yarn over I knit 44 more stitches?)

Row 3 is - knit 1, knit 2 together, yarn over, knit 2 together, knit to the end of the row

repeat row 3 until you have 4 stitches on the needle. (???)

This pattern is from the dishcloth boutique and it’s called Grandmother’s favorite dishcloth. It says for beginners. This will be my first project.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Ok I just found the videos for both the yarn over and the knit 2 together.

So Row 2, it says repeat row 2 until you have 44 stitches on the needle, do I just keep turning my work until I have the 44 stitches?

Row 2 becomes the middle? And row 3 is really the last row?

Yes, row 3 has you doing 2 decreases. The “knit 2 together” is a decrease. You won’t start doing the decreases until you have 44 stitches on your needle.

You are correct, this pattern is knit diagonally.

Row 2 will actually look like this :

Knit 2, yarn over (this is an increase), knit across row (finish knitting the row)
Then, you will turn your work and repeat that, which will add another stitch.
Continue doing that until you have 44 stitches on the needle (i.e. you’re halfway done with the dishcloth).

I used this pattern for a bunch of my dishcloths. You don’t start k2tog till you have it as large as you want it. It’s a decrease. To continue increasing just k2, yo, k to end and turn. Continue till it’s as big as you want.

THEN you start decreasing by k1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, and k to end and turn. The way it’s written it’s confusing I guess. You don’t really need to count rows at all with this pattern. Just count stitches or just do it till it’s as big as you want. I never bother with stitch count on this pattern myself.
