Hello! I am contemplating my next half+half triangles wrap (actually, my first, as I knit the Striped Half + Half first as a gift for my father). I’m debating splurging on Linen Quill as it’s on sale
My question lies in the choice of the wrap + turn vs the German short rows. When I knit my striped H+H, the garter rows all flowed the same direction when the two triangle sides were combined, if that makes sense. However, I’m seeing that a lot of the German short row modified ones have the garter rows turning at a right angle where the triangles meet. Am I right to assume that it is the different choice in short row method that causes this angle to occur? I think it would have looked strange on the Striped H+H to do it this way but I can see why it doesn’t matter as much for the regular H+H! And what would you all recommend for the regular H+H? I don’t typically like the wrap and turn method and prefer German short rows, but I might like the rows to stay consistent. But I’m wondering if this contributes to the more rectangular shape of the ending piece, rather than a perfect square. It’s getting late and my brain is having a hard time picturing the geometry, so I thought I’d ask you all here!
Side question…I’m taking my inspiration for colors from the old movie Stepmom (love the warm autumnal palette). Thinking of Chestnut Red + Red Poppy or Rosewood Pink + Red Poppy. Thoughts?!
These are such gorgeous wraps and the garter stitch works so well here.
I don’t see that the choice in short rows is going to affect the angle at which the triangles come together. It’s more where you begin the second triangle, the “right” side or the “wrong” side (in quotes becaue the shawl doesn’t really have a right or wrong side). See if the project notes here help.
See if the video referred to helps for the perpendicular version.
Can’t miss with that sale on the Linen Quill. Either of the choices you have a beautiful. For myself, I like the Flamingo and Bright Orange but it’s a difficult choice with a wide range of choices. Love the blues too.
Thanks!! The blues are lovely too…I was considering an off-white with the denim blue, as I know I’d use it a lot, but you spend so much time on the triangles that I might go for something more bold and warm!
That version you linked really gets at my point, thank you so much! For some reason, her explanation still isn’t making sense in my head. Maybe I just need to knit some swatches to figure out the “why.” I had previously watched the Cady Jax video and it’s a great explanation of how-to but I’m not sure if she goes into why it switches directions.
And would either direction create a better square, versus a rectangle?
See if this diagram helps. The first triangles are oriented in the same direction. The starting point differs between the parallel and perpendiculat orientations.
I would think that the perpendicular would give you more of a square, less likely to bias but a small swatch is still the best idea.
