essentially, I think I’m- I don’t know the word. (Like the wrappy motion, like yarning over but- knitting) I think doing it wrong. something to do with clockwise and counterclockwise, but I’ve tried both ways and I’m still getting the same stuff. I DO see that it’s one row of knit, and one of purl, like this
WWWWW
“”“”“”“”“”“”“”“”
VVVVVVV
what I’m looking for is
VVVVVV
VVVVVV
VVVVVV
help please I’m two degrees away from eating this goddamn yarn
you’re doing it right! if you’re using straight needles and only knit stitch, that’s exactly what should be happening and it’s called garter stitch.
garter looks like:
VVVV
“”""""""
VVVV
in order to get just VVVV throughout, you have to use stockinette, which is knit one row, purl one row
keep in mind this is only for flat knitting – in the round, knitting every round will give you VVVV
Welcome to the KH forum. I first learned to crochet as a preteen in the 70s. I completed one of every crochet pattern in my mother’s crochet magazine. Then I asked her to teach me to knit. (She didn’t like to knit so it took 2hrs for her to remember enough to teach me.)
I found KnittingHelp.com in '08 to relearn how to knit. Both my wifeand my mom said I needed a hobby.
The first mistake I made was picking up the ‘loop’ to pull through the (knit or purl) stitch in the same way I had for crochet. Knitting wraps the wool up the front and over the top of the needle.
Looks like this on the right needle.

I believe it is called western style.
If the stitches on your needle look like this:
<=/=/==]
Your knit will be more like this:
yyyyyy
yyyyyy
yyyyyy
Where the bottom of each V (knit) is twisted forming a cross over at the bottom to of the V. Looking more like “y”
We’re hookers. Knitters are needlers. I crocheted first also and getting the yarn round the needle counter clockwise was annoying and frustrating at first. Which hand are you using to hold the yarn? Left, as for crochet or right? BTW your knitting looks really good for just starting!
If you’re like me once you get the hang of knitting you’ll love it but crochet will always be my first yarny love and has a very special place in my heart.
