Have any of you been to Purls the Yarn Studio? If so what do you think?
Des Moines-ish Area Knitters
I have not been to the Purls The Yarn Studio yet (despite living 1 minute away from it yet. It is tucked into a small plaza. I do plan on going there this weekend because they are having a pre-inventory sale. I have seen a lot of people post about Debbie Bliss yarn, which this studio carries - so I’m excited to actually feel the yarn - I like to know what I’m buying so if I like it then I know I can order it on-line.
I discovered the The Village Knit Wit which is right off I-235 and I really like it. The store has only been open for a few months. They have a whole wall of Addi Turbo needles! The staff are really helpful and friendly and they have a wide range of yarn.
Creative corner in Valley Junction is also really nice. They offer a lot of free help and have lots of yarn to choose from.
Hope this helps!

i have been to Creative Corner which was nice but was smaller than i expected it to be i guess. I had seen such great reviews I just expected the place to be gi-normous to overflowing with yarn!
Well anyway here is what i was thinking last night. There seem to be a lot of Iowa knitters around this place and I was wondering if there shouldn’t be an Iowa get together. I wouldn’t mind driving for it at all and Des Moines seems to be a pretty central location for where I THINK most people live and for me to not have to drive ALLLL the way over to the east border of Iowa.
So what do ya’ll think?
(oh and the reason I asked about Purls is that i was wondering if it has a bigger sit n knit kind of area than the pink house does.)
anybody interested?
I’ll check out Purls this weekend and report back about the sitting area. I know the Village Knit Wit does have a great sitting area and a spot in the back that has several sets of tables and chairs. There is a coffee shop next to the Purls stuido - and one next to the Village Knit Wit (now that I think about it) so those spaces could be used too and you’d still be close enough to the LYS for stash enhancement.
woo hoo! you can tell whoever it is that tells you that you buy too much yarn that you HAVE to go to Purls this weekend cuz you are doing recon for a possible sit n’ knit! :rofling:
Ooh oooh I would totally go to a sit and knit in Des Moines!!! I will watch this space for further information
I would certainly try! I live way in SE Iowa, but my folks live near Knoxville, not too far from DM, so I could leave the kids with them while I go up.
But March is probably about the last shot I would have for a while, we also have a landscape/garden business, and it’s pretty tricky to get away during growing/planting season!
I haven’t been down to DM in ages… I shoudl go down there as around here pretty much all the yarn stores suck Except a couple …
I’ll have to keep an eye on this thread
I did slink off to the LYS Purls the Yarn Studio this weekend. Surprisingly enough I only bough 1 pair of needles. I wanted to buy yarn for a baby afghan, but I couldn’t justify $75 in yarn for a baby blanket!
The store does have several nice seating areas and a table with chairs (where they teach classes). They have some beautiful yarn, needles and it has a nice ambiance to it.
