Decreasing stitches - armholes

I’m knitting a children’s jumper. Sirdar 2550.

The top half of the jumper is in a chevron pattern.

On shaping the armholes. I do 2 rows of casting of 3 stitches at the beginning of each row. For the next 4 rows I need to dec 1 stitch at each end. I am continuing to work in the chevron pattern and was wondering on any advice on what type of decrease stitch to do that won’t affect the look of the chevron pattern and keep it looking neat.

Very good looking pullover!
A ssk (left leaning) at the beginning of a RS row and a k2tog (right leaning) at the end of the row work well and look neat. On the WS rows a p2tog at the beginning of the row will match the k2tog and continue the slant of the decreases. At the end of the WS row a purl2tog tbl will match the ssk and again continue that slant of decreases.

Thank you for your reply, that’s is very helpful .

Should I knit/purl the first stitch then do the decrease stitch or do the decrease stich on the first stich

Since you’re going to seam the sleeve into the armhole, decreases one or even two sts in from the edges will work nicely for a seam like mattress stitch. If you use a sewing backstitch, you could consider having the decrease at the edges where they will disappear into the seam.
