Decreasing from 56 stitches to 38?

I am about to put the ribbing on my first sweater sleeve.

The directions say: Decrease evenly over the next round to 38 stitches. Change to a smaller needle and work 2 1/4 ins of 1x1 rib. Bind off.

I have 56 stitches on my needles right now, is there a method of decreasing evenly throughout a row to get to the required number of stitches? I have 56 stitches on and I need to decrease to 38 before I can start my ribbing.

If someone has suggestions or knows of where on the forum I might read up on this. Thanks

Marilynn

You have to decrease by 18 sts which is roughly 1/3, so you decrease every third stitch and that should work out.

You enter your numbers in the top part, and it will calculate your decreases in the Balanced decrease section. I just found this! It’s pretty cool. :happydance:

In grid, thanks for that link. I think that will be much faster than working it out with pen and paper. Somehow, I always have to figure a couple of times to get it right. In most cases it may not matter if you’re off a stitch or two, but I’m compulsive about it. I hope to get over that eventually.

I always have to work it out on paper–I’m glad I found this, too. :happydance:

Thanks guys for the information.

Onward I go to finish my first sleeve.

Ingrid, after first reading Marilynn’s post, I was about to recommend The Knitting Fiend. Glad you did. I use her decrease and increase calculators all the time. It beats banging your head against the wall trying to figure it out yourself!
