Decreasing EVERY Row Question

I’m trying to shape the arm hole on a jacket and the pattern states…

“beginning on the next RS row, decrease 1 st each end of needle every row 8 times”

I’m knitting the back piece from the bottom up so I have figured that on the RS I’ll do a “slip 1, k1, psso” for the left slant first and then when I reach the end I’ll do a “k2tog” for a right slant. CORRECT?

Question arises when I get to the WS (purl side) of the jacket. What decrease do I do at either end of the needles on THIS side?

THANK YOU guys SOOO much for your guidance/help on this. I’ve frogged too many times trying to figure out on my own.

For the armhole of a sweater, it doesn’t matter how you decrease. It’s just simplest to knit 2 together on each edge, or purl 2 together on each edge.

See, the decrease won’t show at all once you sew up the sleeves in the armhole. Or, if you’re making a vest, once you put the ribbing around the armhole edge to finish it off.

So just make it easy on yourself. Hey, if slip 1, knit 1, psso is your preferred method of decreasing, gofer it.

If you want to keep the decreases slanting the right ways, at the beginning of wrong side rows do a P2tog (it will slant to the right, on the RS of your work) and at the end of wrong side rows do a SSP. If you don’t know how to SSP I’m sure there’s a video for it in the “Glossary” tab at the top of this page.
