I’m a newbie, Help!!! I have to decrease 2 stitches at the beginning & the end of a knit row. I’m so confused! I know how to cast off, but I’ve watched several video on I’m still confused. Can someone help me. I know how to knit 2 together (here’s where I get stupid: this method decreases 1 stitch right?) Can someone help me, please?:??
Hello there and welcome. Yes, knit 2 together will decrease, but there are also other methods available. Do you have a pattern name that you’re working from? It might tell you to decrease in a certain manner to achieve a specific look. Can you give us a little more info?
Patrons Shetland Chunky-Shaker Tunic (size Medium)
This is the pattern, interestingly they don’t say how to decrease, just to do it! I’ll let someone more experienced with garments advise on the best way to decrease for the arm holes.
Yes, that’s the pattern. Trying to make it for my niece for Christmas. Thank you!!!
Hi there!
When I read thru the pattern, it says to
Shape Raglans
Next Row
The next set of instructions says to “Keeping cont of pat, dec 2 sts each end of needle as before on next, and every following… row” That means to follow the instructions for “Next Row”. THAT row decreases 2 sts at each end of the needle.
At least, that’s MY interpretation of it. Maybe someone else thinks something different.

Okay, so, I knit 3 together for 2 stitch decrease at both ends?
They do say how to decrease, it’s just a couple of paragraphs back in the pattern.
To expand on knitcindy’s post:
In the section headed Shape Raglans: they give the instruction [Next Row:K5. K3Tog. Pat to last 8 sts. Sl1. K2Tog. psso. K5
Its this row in italics that gives the instructions for the decrease rows.
Here’s the video for the Sl1, K2tog. psso
Or, if you prefer,
Slip, Slip, Slip, Knit will give the same result as Sl1, K2tog. psso.
THANKS dclutterchique!!! That’s what I meant to say, just didn’t word it correctly! Do that “Next Row” EXACTLY for your decrease row!!!

Your post made sense to me, but the decrease instructions are easy to miss, as proved by butlersabroad (and, @butlersabroad, you don’t miss much). So I thought a little more detail could be helpful.
@Solitaire, welcome to the wonderful world of knitting patterns where, sometimes, instructions for what to do next are given previously!
Julie, thank you. So, the instructions, “Net row:” are steps to decrease 4 stitches, 2 at the beginning & 2 at the end of the row?
Yes, you decrease 2 sts at each end of the row. The second decrease is Sl1. K2tog. psso.
