Hi everyone! I’m working on a hat pattern and the part of decreases to shape the crown is not very clear to me, so I hope someone can help me understand it.
Now work decreases that shape the crown. Change to the 3.5 mm double pointed needles when necessary to accommodate the smaller number of sts (or to a longer circular needle if you prefer to do it with the magic loop technique).
Divide the sts using markers starting from the beginning of the round as follows:
*Place marker, k 2, place marker, work 22 (22) 26 (26) sts in rib *, repeat from * to * 4 times in total until the end of the round. You should have 8 markers in total.
The decreases are worked by working two sts together on each side of the two knit sts marked with the markers (see below).
The decreases before the 2 knit sts (i.e. on the right side) are worked as follows:
If the second to last st before the marker is a purl st: P2togtbl.
If the second to last st before the marker is a knit st: Ssk improved.
The decreases after the 2 knit sts (i.e. on the left side) are worked as follows:
If the second st after the marker is a purl st: P2tog.
If the second st after the marker is a knit st: K2tog.
Work the decreases as described above on every 2nd round a total of 6 (6) 7 (7) times (= 48 (48) 56 (56) sts).
Next, work the decreases as described above on every round a total of 4 (4) 5 (5) times (= 16 (16) 16 (16) sts).
-What I don’t get is what does it mean “second to last stitch”, “before the 2 knit sts” and “after the 2 knit sts”.
-When it says “every second round” does it mean I have to work one round, decrease one round, work one round, decrease one round, etc.?
-Is there a way to understand how much cm will the decreases take, so that I can make the hat the right lenght?
Thank you in advance to anyone who will reply!
You’re to place a marker on either side of 2 knit sts. Do this 4 times total with the spacing given for your size. For the smallest size that would be 22sts:
M, k2, M, 22sts, M, k2, M, 22sts, M, k2, M, 22sts, M, k2, M, 22sts.
The “second to the last st” is a bit obscure but it really means 2sts before the marker or 2sts after the next marker. So work up to 2sts before the marker and then follow the recommendation of the pattern on how to work the decrease on the next 2sts. The same when you’ve slipped the marker, knit the 2 center sts and slipped the 2nd marker, follow the pattern instructions for the kind of decrease.
Yes, you’ve got it, work one round with no decreases, decrease one round and so on.
You can look at your row gauge and use the rows/10cm to estimate the length of all the crown rounds.
What is the name of your pattern? Sounds intriguing.
I’m making the third size, so the decreases will take 20 rounds in total, right?
This is the hipster hat by Petiteknit btw!
Very nice!
Should take 7x2 rounds plus 5 rounds or 19 rounds to get to 16sts.
Hello!
I also have a question regarding this pattern and decreasing. Is it okay for me to continue this thread?
I was wondering where in the round you should start to decrease? The pattern says to place the first stitch marker at the beginning of the round. The beginning of the round has two knit stitches and the end of the round has two purl stitches. Then the pattern says to decrease the stitches before the knit stitches. Should i therefore move the beginning of the round?
There’s so much information earlier in the post that this seems like the best place to post.
You have a beginning of round marker, 2 knits then a second marker. Start the decreases after that second marker. No need to move the marker. When you come around (working decreases before and after the various markers) to the last 2sts before the beginning of the round marker, work a decrease. At least for now the 2knits between each set of markers won’t have decreases in them.
2p, BOR marker, 2k, marker, 2p and then around the hat to the 2p before the BOR marker. Decrease in the bolded sts.
