Decrease in Cat's Eye Lace?

I started making a hat in Cat’s Eye (following the directions here) but now I can’t figure out how to decrease and maintain the pattern. I either end up with huge holes or none at all so it doesn’t look like lace. I’d like to decrease from 72 to 8 sts over about 10 rounds so the hat isn’t super long. Can anyone tell me how to do this or point me in the direction of a pattern that explains? Thanks!

Have you played around with decreasing every other k4? For that k4 repeat, do a single yarn over. In the next row p2tog, p into the yo, p1. On the next row, dec in the alternate k4 and do the single yarn over there.
There’ll come a point where you can’t do the pattern and you’ll need to change to stockinette stitch but the longer you can hold off doing that, the better.

I hadn’t thought of that. I’ll give it a try. Thanks!
