Death Valley Beanie
FYI, knitting in the round. Chart repeats 3 times for each row.
For these instructions…I’m at a loss for what to do. Trying to take it step by step but it doesn’t seem to make sense.
- Work pattern to last stitch on Row 13.
The last stitch is a knit. Do I do that stitch and stop…or stop before it? I’m thinking before - Because next it says:
*Sl st to right needle, remove marker, place stitch on left needle, replace marker, work pattern to last stitch.
The only way to slip a stitch to the right needle then remove the marker is to slip that last knit stitch of row 13. Then “work pattern to last stitch” would mean to then just knit that last stitch. Right?
But then…repeat from * two more times?
What???
Slip another stitch just to slip it back and work the pattern to the last stitch (of row 14 now)?
What am I missing? I need this explained like I’m a two year old. Lol
How many markers do you have? The idea of moving the markers is to change either the beginning of round or the placement of a couple of other markers. In order to move the marker the designer has you slip the next stitch to the right needle, take off the marker, slip the same stitch back to the left needle and replace the marker. The difference is that the marker has shifted one stitch to the right. If there are other markers (and it looks as if there are) shift those markers too.
I linked to the errata but here it is again since it involves row 14.

I have a marker at each repeat. Just don’t understand why it would say to repeat from * two more times and then work last chart repeat as written. Maybe the asterisk should have been placed before the first line and remove “on row 13” to have knitters slip the marker a stitch at the end of each repeat? Going to give that a shot.
So…it seemed to be working beautifully. Slipped the marker one stitch at the beginning of row 14. Then started row 14…at the end of the first repeat, I stopped at second to last stitch, slipped st, removed marker, slipped back, knit last stitch and began next repeat. Repeated steps a second time for next row repeat. Then…
Work last chart repeat as written to end of round…only I am now one stitch short. So I’m wondering…
Row 14 starts with a knit stitch. Row 13 ended with a knit stitch. The instructions said to work pattern to last stitch after slipping the marker, i.e knit the last stitch of row 13, then knit another stitch for the beginning of row 14. But since the last stitch became the first, the directions maybe should have left out the “work pattern to last stitch” after replacing marker? Think I will tink and try that.
That did the trick!

You are succeeding with the pattern! I hope you post good notes on Ravelry. Can’t wait to see this one. Friends have knit other hats from the National Parks book and loved the results. (Now there’s also one for the US.)

Thank you! I did put my notes in Ravelry. I saw so many people post about having problems with this pattern on the same rows but nobody posted what they did to fix the issues.
I also knit the Zion park and Acadia beanies from this book. They were great and given as gifts!
