I’m working on the cardigan. I finished the ribbing and the chart of the bear for the left front. After that the directions say to knit in stockinette for 11 rows. Then the directions get squirrely for the shaping:
Shape Front
Dec 1 st at end of next row and at same (front) edge on every foil 3rd row until 17(19,21) sts rem. Work 7 rows straight. Cast off loosely.
Per the newborn directions, I currently have 24 stitches. If I dec one stitch per row I’ll have it down to 17 stitches in 7 rows. I’m not sure if that’s what the directions say to do, though, and if they do – do I dec along the front where the buttons will be or along the side where the seam to the back will be? Does anyone know what “foil” refers to?
foil is that silvery stuff you wrap things in. Without the typo, “foll” means following.
So they want you to decrease every third row at the front edge, so it would be: row 1-knit
row 2-knit
row 3-dec
row 4-knit
row 5-knit
row 6 dec until you get down to 17 stitches
I’ve got another question about that Crystal Palace teddy bear sweater. I really appreciate the help on this board!
I’ve knitted all of the pieces and am now ready to do the front band of the cardigan. Here’s where I am in the directions:
FRONT BAND
Taking 1 st into seams and matching sts, join both shoulder seams leaving 18(20,22) sts for back neck. With size 2 (3mm) needles and A, cast on 7 sts.
1st row (right side): K2, (p1, k1) twice, k1.
2nd row:K1,(p1,k1)to end.
These 2 rows form the rib. Rep them once.
Next row (make buttonhole): K2, p2 tog, yrn, p1, k2. Rib 9(11, 13) rows, then rep buttonhole row. Rep last 10(12,14) rows twice more, thus 4 buttonholes will have been worked. Cont in rib until band, when slightly stretched, fits up both fronts and across back neck. Cast off in ribbing.
I understand the first sentence – seam up the two fronts to the back, leaving a gap for the neck. It’s after that I get confused. It doesn’t say pick up stitches, so I’m not sure if I’m supposed to knit the band for the buttons and button holes separate and then seam them onto the two fronts, or pick up stitches and knit the band directly on to each front piece? Does anyone know?
I’ve been just knitting garter stitch instead of the ribbing all around b/c it was easier for me when I started the sweater a while ago.
