I have made two pairs of Elizabeth Zimmermann’s nether garments (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/nether-garments---adult-september). I am making a third pair, and realized I need to add a crotch gusset. Nether garments are worked from the bottom up, and the only gusset help I have been able to find is for socks, underarms, or top down knitted pants. None of these are helping me figure out how to knit a crotch gusset in bottom up pants.
EZ’s directions call for knitting each leg up to crotch, putting 3-4 inches of stitches on yarn, and then knitting the garment in the round, and knitting or sewing the crotch stitches together at the end.
How can I add a crotch gusset so that when I do yoga I do not stretch out the stitches in the crotch area?
You could do it with a seamed piece but ideally, you’d like to avoid seams. These shorts have increases every 3 rows or so at the top of the legs. I wonder if you made the increases more frequently, it would serve the purpose of a gusset?
Thank you for your suggestion. I agree I don’t want seams in the crotch area. Also I think this method is beyond my knitting skills and experience. I don’t have any experience with knitting gussets, and I also don’t understand how the Sweetheart Shorts pattern is constructed. If there were photos of the crotch I might be able to figure it out… Hopefully someone else can offer suggestions or their experience knitting a gusset for crotches.
The photo shows the buckling at the crotch due to the increases on either side of the markers for front and back seam. The only seaming that is done is to join the cast on sts at each leg to the crotch. This is detailed under Finishing. The sts put on hold are for one of the legs while you work on the other.
This pattern doesn’t have an inserted gusset but it was the only one I could find that gave an idea of crotch shaping with minimal seams.
Patterns that put sts on hold for the crotch might be joined sturdily with 3-needle bind off. Have you searched Ravelry for possible patterns to use as models?
I can read what you wrote, but I cannot visualize it. I read the pattern repeatedly, but could still not visualize what the crotch would look like. I just can’t follow what the pattern says, much less adapt it to my project.
I have spent many nights searching on Ravelry and searching with google, duckduckgo and startpage… Thank you for trying to help me understand.
