Hi. I’m making my first hat and it’s just turning out like a pancake. What am I doing wrong? Do all hats do this until the end? I am about halfway through the pattern and the only part that ever curls in is the last 2-3 rows. I was about 3/4 of the way through and thought I might have to skip the crochet after the slip stitch on each row, so I tore out back to one of my markers and re-did it while skipping the stitch after the slip but it doesn’t seem to make any difference…Help!
It would be really helpful if you could provide a link to the pattern you are using so we could take a look and see where you might be having difficulty. Or at least a picture of what it is supposed to look like when it is finished.
But don’t give up…with a little more information, someone here will be able to help you out!
MGM
I agree with MGM, the link to pattern or photo would be helpful. It sounds like you are still increasing and that is why it is a "pancake " shape. Once you get the amount of stitches you need for the width of the hat,you will just start crocheting around with no increases to get the shape of a hat.
Hope this helps!
Usually it takes a couple inches after you stop the increases for it to begin to curve and it does it gradually. Are you working it as a complete spiral, or at the end of a round, joining and doing a chain to start the next round? If you’re doing the chain, you may be inadvertently still adding a stitch each round.
I do way more crocheting then knitting, and I make a ton of hats, lol. Not sure what your pattern looks like, but when I make hats, they do start out kinda pancake shape (flat) for the first few inches, even when I make tote bags, but once you stop increasing they get the right shape, well the beanies I make anyway. It threw me off at first too when they were that shape but I kept going and eventually they started looking more like hats.
One thing I notice, when I make bags (which have a hat like shape but bigger) is I sometimes end up with extra stitches. I admit I’m kinda lazy sometimes and don’t feel like counting when each row has 100+ stitches, but usually if they start looking like they are still increasing when they shouldn’t I’ll skip the last stitch and first stitch of the next row. With hats counting isn’t such a pain cause it’s smaller. Sometimes it’s easy to get confused on the where to end and begin the next row and that’s what usually causes me to end up with extra.

There is the link to the pattern I am using. I still haven’t figured it out. Everything looks good all the way up until the rows 11-23. I did crochet a few extra inches to see if maybe I was just stopping too soon… But it is still flat. Only the last inch or two is curling in no matter how far I actually crochet.
Thanks for your help!
How do your stitch numbers match up with the what you should have by then?
I am redoing from row 9 and the last four rows have had 61 sc… Don’t ask how I got up to 61. I think I was adding some but I can’t figure out where. Now I am at least staying consistant at 61. I think I’m only supposed to have 54… How many decreases can I do in one row to get it back on track without messing up the shape/look of the hat?
try this site:http://crochet-mania.blogspot.com/2009/05/crochet-hat-with-brim.html
crochet hat w/ brim. I have personally tried it and it is super easy to make. it also comes with a video tutorial on youtube.
this is for a baby beanie cap: http://crochet-mania.blogspot.com/2008/06/single-crochet-baby-beanie-cap.html
I made this one for my goddaughter and it is cute. also has video tutorial.
both patterns can be worked in a continuous round or individual rounds.
saw the pattern. I can also see where u have might have gotten it wrong but its not your fault its the pattern instructions.
I recommend that you do the baby beanie cap using a larger hook to make it for adult size. maybe a size K hook would or J, play w/ hook size to get the right dimensions for adult size. for baby I used size F like the pattern says and the baby cap comes just right.
art of crochet by teresa is good for beginner.
The same exact thing is happening to me and I’m a new crocheter. I’m so frustrated. My Fiance wants me to make him a beanie and I did it to about row 16 just like the pattern said and it looks like a frisby! Ughhh:shrug:
ChiefsChick: According to Diana, the instructions are unclear for the original hat pattern (http://www.headhuggers.org/patterns/cpatt01.htm).
Did you try using the links and hook sizes Diana recommended earlier in this thread?
You might find this video helpful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoCRUObS0Tc She joins her rounds in the video, your pattern says not to. Maybe it would be easier to keep track of stitch counts if you do join your rounds.
