Counting rows in knitting

i’m new here and would appreciate your forgiveness if i’m posting something that already could have been posted.

i just recently learned how to purl. been just a-knitting my heart out till now. so i started a project (easy) to start me on my knitting/purling adventure.

problem is, i’ve lost track of how many rows i’ve done.

do you all know an easy way for me to read my knitting to tell how many i’ve done? or alternatively, is there another post that i could read to show me?

thanks in advance!

If you’re doing stockinette/stocking stitch, that is, knit 1 row, purl 1 row, you will have Vs on one side and purl bumps on the other. Hold your work so that you’re looking at the V side. Start at your cast-on edge and just count the Vs up-- each V is one row. It can help to mark every 10 rows or so with a safety pin. It helps both with the counting you’re doing now, and if you leave them in, then also keeping track as you go-- you can count by 10s. Make sense?

yes! yes! yes!
this makes perfect sense!
thank you so much!
just need to buy some safety pins so this doesn’t happen to me again.

If it’s stockinette, I find it easier to count the purl bumps. Sometimes the Vs blur into each other and I lose track.
