Or a cardigan. What are some things you wish you’d known before starting your first.
any suggestions; tips; hints?
I’ve found that most sweaters, for me, at least, have armholes that are too big. It’s awful to try on a finished sweater and feel that you have bat wings. :ick:
Measure a sweater that you love the fit of, then try to get your pattern to match.
Another example is for the sleeves. I have thin wrists, so I usually start a sweater with the smaller cuff measurements and keep holding the sleeves on my arm to make sure that it’s not too big around.
Remember that the sweater is for YOU–not the model in the book and try to adapt it accordingly.
I think cardgans are usually nicer with front bands that are picked up and knit on rather than included along the edges as you make them. I suppose sometimes the style really works best with the self bands though. You can usually change patterns that have self bands to those you pick up. Self bands are easy though and might be nice on your first sweater.
I wish I’d known about knitting sweaters in the round and not had to seam.
Well, now you can. I think I found out about them early on, and while I have made a few seamed ones, I prefer top down seamless.
