I’m making a poncho and because I’m so new at knitting I’m unsure how to complete the next step.
The pattern says:
Knit 3 rounds even. (I did this)
Cont as established, dec 8 sts every following 4th rnd to 64 sts.
Could someone translate this for me so I can make some sense?

Decrease on the next row, call it row 1 and then on rows 5, 9, 13, 17 etc until you have 64sts.

If you don’t want to count, you can find the middle of your row. Count 32 stitches to the right and left of it and place markers. I always seem to go on and on lah di dah not paying attention and decrease more stitches than I need to. Then I have to rip it out. Which is a bummer.
