Confusing instructions

This pattern just keeps confusing me. I am now ready to increase for the sleeves. The increases are what is confusing me.

Sleeve increase: When piece measures 10 ½ (11 ½, 12 ½) inches, inc 2 sts each end of needle 5 times; inc 3 sts each end twice; inc one st each end every 1 (1, 1 ½) inches 4 (2, 4) times; inc 0 (1, 0) sts each end every 1 ½ inches twice - 122 (l27, 132) sts. Work inc sts in pattern

They’re using ‘inc’ to mean ‘add sts’, which aren’t always a simple inc. If a pattern has you inc more than 1 st at the edge of a row, you would cast them on, not do a regular inc. At the right measurement for your size, CO 2 sts at the beg and end of the row 5 times, then CO 3 sts 2 times. Next inc a st at the beg and end every X inches y times. If you’re doing the middle size, then inc every 1½" 2 more times.

Thank you suzeeq, that was clear as mud :teehee: . Ummm I still don’t understand.

To cast on sts at the beg of the row, use a knitted CO. The sleeves will make a T shape out from the body, but done gradually (2 at each side, then 3 at each side, etc) they form a curve. If you think of adding them at the beg of the rows it might help.

It’s easier than you think, just try it out. CO 2 sts at the beg of the next row, knit across them and the old sts to the end of the row. CO 2 st at the beg of the next row, knit across. Do this another 4 times, then CO 3 sts at the beg of the next 6 rows. Then you inc only 1 st on each end every inch or inch and a half a couple more times.

Thanks. I will try this out and see what happens. Knitting is an adventure and I am still having a lot of fun.

Good, keep up the sense of fun and learning and you’ll do very well.
