Confused with pattern

Hello,

Just have a question about the “Shape Raglan” section (image below) which I’m about to begin. I am a bit confused about the wording of it and hoped you could help.

It says cast off 5 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows which will leave me with 51 stitches which I understand however do I:

Cast off 5 then knit to the end of the row
Cast off 5 then purl to the end of the row like a continuation of the stocking stitch previously or

Row 1: cast off five then K1, S1,K1, PSSO, Knit to last 3 stitches, k2 tog, k1.

Row 2: cast off 5, Purl to end of row

And then three and four as described.

Wasn’t sure if the cast off five were just a normal knit and purl before I started row 1 to five or if they are inclusive of the Row 1 and Row 2.

Just thought I’d ask before I started to prevent me going wrong!! Hope what I’ve described makes some sort of sense.

Thanks very much for your help,

Joe

Welcome! Yes the cast off starts on row 1 with the two decreases as that will then leave you with the 49sts! So when you get to the decrease on the next then every 4th row for 10 rows you’ll end up with the 43sts needed. Hope this helped

Just to be clear, the bind off of 5 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows happens first leaving you with 51sts. Then you start row 1 as the row following these 2 bind off rows.

Thanks for your reply. This is the first jumper I’ve knitted so I’m very much a beginner! I’m knitting the 2nd from top size. I’m still a bit confused. Up until this point I’ve been working in stocking stitch and ended on a WS Row with 61 stitches which has gone fine. The start of the raglan section suggests that the next thing I do is cast off 5 stitches and knit to end. Next row cast off 5 purl to end. It says now that leaves me with 51 stitches AND THEN I start with rows 1 to 4. Is this correct? Thanks again

Thanks very much. I’m a beginner so need a bit of help!!
