I have a pattern that calls for 3mm knitting needle (UK 11) this is a pattern by Pony out of England. The other is a 4mm (UK 8), my chart for knitting needles don’t have a 3 mm, so would I use the 3 1/4 which would be a size 3…my chart has the 4mm which is my size 6, so I am hoping that this is correct… also crochet hook 2.5, but chart don’t have 2.5, it has 2 1/4 which would be a B hook or 2 3/4 which is the C hook…confused because the 2.5 is in the middle, so it could go either way…
I know, u want to know what I am :knitting: My mother has 6 poodles…yes u heard me:oo: anyway she don’t knit, but she crochets, she wants me to teach her how to knit…well she has the pattern for a knit poodle and it’s from the UK, but am confused on these sizes… also never heard of DK/snowflake chunky, what can I sub it with? I will be leaving in a few days by bus to visit my mother for a month…I want to make sure I have the right needles with me…

You need the needles/hooks that will give you the gauge needed for the pattern which may not be the same as the size used in the pattern as your tension could be looser or tighter. So work up some samples for your patterns with the closest sizes you have and see how many sts you get in 4" compared to the pattern gauge. Here’s a needle/hook conversion chart, maybe that will help you sort it out.
On the yarn, I dunno. DK is a weight unless it’s also a yarn brand and so is chunky. You’d probably need larger needles and hooks for the chunky weight yarn - what needle and gauge does it suggest?

Now I went to your link and it was no different then my chart…so I will use 3 and 6 knitting needles and the C hook… I have been knitting for yrs. I know how to read a chart, was just confused as there is no 3 mm and no 2.5 for crochet hook…
This company sells Pony knitting needles as that was started in pattern to use size 3 mm pony knitting needles…I will not need bigger needles as the yarn is toytime dk and snowflake chunky… I didn’t know that they had 2 different yarns until I read more… so I guess the yarn is from this company too…so I am trying to find a sub. for it…
Gauge is 26 sts and 36 rows to 10cm (4in) measured over SS with Toytime DK on 3mm needles and 18 sts and 24 rows to 10cm (4in) measured over SS with Snowflake Chunky on 4mm knitting needles or the size required to give correct tension…
Get as close to the mm sizes as you can, the old UK sizes aren’t used much anymore, they generally go by the mms now. Not all the mm sizes have US equivalents, so get the closest you can.
But what I’m also saying is that even if you did have the correct size, you might not be able to match the pattern gauge with it, and would have to go larger or smaller. This is normal as the designer may knit or crochet looser or tighter than you. [I][U]Use whatever size gives you the gauge for the pattern.[/U][/I] Same thing with matching the yarn, find some that is usually worked at the gauge as the original on the needles or hooks.
The Snowflake Chunky is a thick fuzzy textured yarn, no doubt this is what makes the “furriness” of the poodle. You could substitute Bernat Soft Boucle, Caron Bliss, or JoAnn Casual Boucle.
The DK is a smooth thinner yarn. You could use Bernat Sweet Baby, JoAnn Cuddle, or Lion Brand Babysoft.
The difference in needle and hook sizes from different countries can be confusing, can’t it? I remember going into a yarn store looking for a 4.25mm size 6 needle, and being told there is no such thing. In the USA the size 6 is 4mm.
The nice thing about making a toy such as your poodle is that gauge is not as crucial. So what if yours is an inch or so larger or smaller than the pattern? Go with the needles closest to the size called for and you should be fine.
