Confused on a sock pattern

Good morning, My name is Lisa and I am knitting a sock pattern that the leg goes for about 8 inches and then this happens and I am confused as to what to do.
I end with 3rd needle and then I sl two stitches off beginning of 3rd needle onto end of 2nd needle. so that leaves 26 stitches on 2nd needle , 14 on 3rd and 16 on 1st needle.
Im to divide the 26 stitichones onto two needles evenly so 13 on each for instep and then rib the 16 stitches off the 1st needle onto end of 3rd needle That now leaves 30 stitches for heel. my confusion is when I end with beginning of 3rd needle and sl the two stiches off onto 2nd needle my yarn I was knitting with is now three stitches from the 2 sl stitches i put on the 2nd needle I confused on how to continue. BTW I am a novice knitter

Welcome to the forum!
What is the name of your pattern and designer?
Your working yarn is at the end of the 3rd needle. The 2sts at the beginning of the 3rd needle are just slipped onto the 2nd needle. The 26 sts now on the 2nd needle are slipped onto two needles so the working yarn is still at the end of the 3rd needle. It’s likely that the sts on the 2nd needle will rest there while you work on the heel sts.

Now pick up the working yarn strand and rib across the 16sts on the first needle. This gives you 30sts for the heel with the working yarn at the end of the first needle.

Hello,

Breaking it Down:
You finished knitting the leg and ended on the 3rd needle.
You moved 2 stitches from the beginning of Needle 3 to the end of Needle 2.
Now, Needle 2 has 26 stitches.
Needle 3 has 14 stitches.
Needle 1 has 16 stitches.
Next, you need to divide Needle 2 into two needles for the instep (13 stitches on each).
Then, move the 16 stitches from Needle 1 to the end of Needle 3 to form the heel.
This leaves you with 30 stitches for the heel.
The Problem:
After shifting the two stitches, your working yarn is now stuck on Needle 3, three stitches away from where you need it to be.

How to Continue:
Since you are preparing for the heel, your working yarn needs to be positioned at the start of the heel stitches (which are now all on Needle 3). You have a couple of options:

Simply slip the working yarn over to the correct position.

If your working yarn is three stitches away, carefully slip those three stitches purlwise (without knitting them) onto Needle 3 so that your yarn is at the beginning of the heel.
This is an easy fix and won’t change the stitch count.
Rearrange the stitch shifting slightly.

Instead of moving the two stitches from Needle 3 to Needle 2 first, try knitting across Needle 3 first and then rearrange the stitches.
This way, your working yarn stays in a logical place.
Continue as if working in the round, but your next row will be back across the heel stitches.

If your pattern tells you to start working the heel next, you can just turn your work and begin knitting back across Needle 3 without worrying about the stitch placement too much.

I disagree. It’s perhaps confusion over the difference between slipping sts and knitting or ribbing sts.

The 2sts were slipped off the beginning of #3 so that the position of the working yarn at the end of #3 is unaffected.
Slipping sts and redistributing sts from #2 doesn’t change the position of the working yarn.
Ribbing or knitting in rib across the 16sts on needle #1 using the working yarn waiting at the end of needle #3 brings the working yarn to the end of #1 ready to work the heel turns.
