Confused about washing

Hi! When people say thatwashing helps acrylic to be softer, do they mean just soaking in water or do they mean using something like Woolite–actually “cleaning” it? I’m finishing up a scarf of 73% acrylic, 27%nylon with a sparkle thread woven through. It’s scratchy and I need to soften it. I used to soak my scratchy sweaters in cream rinse for hair–can’t find that anymore. How about fabric softener? Need guidance! Thanks.

What I do, is I actually wash my acrylic scarves in the washer, usually on the knit setting, and you dont have that, light wash should do, with cold water. When it starts the rinse cycle, lift the lid and squirt in some hair conditioner. And then I add a dryer sheet and tumble dry. But if you wanted, you could probably soak it in a conditioner/water mixture, and then rinse it and dry it. It would probably work.

You can do a regular wash cycle. I wash my knit acrylics with the rest of the laundry, nothing special.

I also do my acrylics in the washer/dryer with other items. No special treatment and they come out very soft. (Altho I’ve not machined anything with nylon or ‘sparkle’ threads.)

Does the yarn wrapper give washing instructions. If it says machine washable then I would put it in the machine on delicate cycle. I use regular detergent and fabric softener. Throw in dryer on low heat and run for 15-20 minutes . It softens the yarn beautifully.

I just throw them in on regular cycle. I do try to take them out of the dryer sooner than the rest of the stuff, but I do that with all stuff that drys fast.
