Confused about Pattern Instruction

Hi Everyone!

I have this pattern for a hat I’m working on and I’m a little confused about the pattern for one particular part of the row. It goes like this:

Round 1: (K2, P1, K2, P1, K2tog, P1) repeat a total of 5 times. K2, P1 (43 stitches remain)

Okay, now I get that I have to do the first part 5 times, but for the second part (the K2, P1), am I supposed to do a single row of that or what?

This is a pattern I got from Ravelry, here’s the link if anyone wants to take a look at it and maybe help me to figure out the second part?

Any help I get would be greatly appreciated. :smiley:

I guess the problem is the (43 stitches remain)-part?

You started of with 48 stitches.

In round 1, you did a 5 time repeat of k2tog, so you will have 5 stitches less at the end of this round. That is what the (43 stitches remain) is all about.

So round 1 means:
K2, P1, K2, P1, K2tog, P1 (you’ve knitted 9 stitches but have 8 left)
K2, P1, K2, P1, K2tog, P1 (now you’ve knitted 18 in total, 16 left)
K2, P1, K2, P1, K2tog, P1 (now you’ve knitted 27 in total, 24 left)
K2, P1, K2, P1, K2tog, P1 (now you’ve knitted 36 in total, 32 left)
K2, P1, K2, P1, K2tog, P1 (now you’ve knitted 45 in total, 40 left)
K2, P1 (with these last 3 stitches knit, you’ve knitted the 48 you casted on originally and you have 43 stitches left for the next round)

So you just have to do K2,P1 ONCE (not a whole ribbing row)

That does clear up it up quite a bit, thank you! I do have another question, however.

On the next round, it says:

Round 2 and all even rounds: Work even in pattern.

What exactly does that mean? Once again, I am confused.

You would knit the stitches as they present themselves, i.e. knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches.

Yes, in knitting patterns ‘work (or knit) even(ly)’ means to carry on knitting the pattern you’ve been knitting with no increases, decreases, cast ons or bind offs. So it is possible to have an instruction that reads ‘work even for the next 3 rows’ although 3 is an odd number. In this case you’ll be doing as clairweber said.

Well the last stitches I did were K2, P1. So all I have to do then is just repeat the K2, P1 for one more round?

Not quite, because you did (K2, P1, K2, P1, K2tog, P1) repeat a total of 5 times, K2, P1 on Round 1 you will be doing (K2, P1, K2, P1, K1, P1) repeat a total of 5 times, K2, P1 on Round 2.

So when you do a K2tog on a decrease round this becomes a K1 on a normal round.
