Confused about increase instructions

I am confused about a Drops Design pattern 105-25. I am finishing up the back which is knit bottom to top. Pattern states to increase 1 st each side at shoulders. There is a 4 st garter on both edges of armholes. The inc instruction says “Inc inside 4 garter stitches as follows: Make 1 yo,k yo into back of st on return row. Work inc sts in stockinette st”. What does it mean “work sts in stockinette st”? Photos would not attach properly!

Inside the 4 garter stitch borders the sts are worked in stockinette unless the pattern calls for changes (it will do that toward the neck). Stockinette is knit one row, purl one row. Yarn over increases are used and the instruction is to knit into the back loop of the yarn over in order to close up the hole on the next row.

Thank you! I see now! I was taking it literally “inside 4 garter stitches .” You cleared it up by adding the word border. Should I do the increase right adjacent to the garter stitch border on both sides. You only do the increase twice for a total of 4 st increase.

Yes, increase adjacent to the 4 garter border sts (between the body of the cardigan and the border). You’re not the only one who has had this question on the increases.
Just curious, are you working the top with knit sts showing in the body on the outward facing side or purl sts facing?

You are so helpful. I really appreciate it. I am having the knit side as the right side facing outward.

I have read ahead to the R front side and may have more questions. Maybe because it’s a free pattern but I find the directions a little vague. I decided to try it because the vest was just what I was looking for.

Thanks again for your help.

Drops patterns are translations and they often over specify so are sometimes confusing. Come back anytime with questions or comments!

Thank you!

I have successfully finished the back and R front of the vest. I am about to start the L front and it just says to mirror the R front. I have knit Cardigans before but usually the directions are spelled out for us beginners. Should I work the first row with the 4 garter st at the end and do the armhole on the opposite side or do 4 garter st of the first row just as the R and start mirroring when I get to the armhole and do the bind off on the P (wrong side)? I’m probably making this more difficult than it is but I’m afraid to end up with 2 R front pieces.

It’s a pain when directions for the two fronts aren’t spelled out. You’re right, two Right fronts won’t work. Use the right front as a guide as you knit.
You want to mirror from the beginning so that the garter edge is up the front opening. For the left front that means that with the right side (RS) or public side (knit side) of the knitting facing you the edge stitch is at beginning of row (side or armhole edge) and the garter edge is at the end of row (the neck edge).
Decrease for the V at the end of the RS row, armhole decreases at the beginning of the RS rows. You’ll do the bind off at the end from the armhole edge although it looks like all the sts are bound off at the shoulder so you could actually bind off from either neck or armhole edge.
Use the Right front to compare to that you keep on track with the neck vs armhole edge. You’re well on your way and nearly finished!

Thanks for the encouragement. Your response will get me on the right track. I’ll be traveling and decided I should take the completed side with me just to compare. I’ll send you a pic once it’s completed😊
