Good morning everyone I’m back I’m stuck again well not even started my project I’m trying to make ornaments of the nightmare before Christmas pattern and I just don’t understand the color chart it’s telling me to co 12 stitches and even out with 4 DPN needles but than my first stitch from right to left is knit one and the other stitch’s are no stitches I need help
This is a wonderful idea and a very nice pattern. The cast on is 12 sts on 4 needles so you have 3sts on each needle. Ignore the no stitch boxes. They are only there to maintain the rectangular grid or chart. They represent sts that will be filled in on later rows. For now, skip over them.
Knit stitch 1 then knit stitch 8 followed by stitch 16. Repeat that on each of the needles. Essentially you are knitting the first round.
On round 2 knit stitch 1, then stitch 8, then increase and finish with stitch 16. Repeat this around on the other 3 needles. You’ve already filled in one of those no stitch boxes on each needle when you make the increases.
So the no stitch I knit with a different color
There is no stitch on your needles corresponding to the grey boxes. Those sts don’t exist yet.
You only have 3sts per dpn. So no, do not knit the grey “no stitch” box with different color. If your background color is black, knit the first round (all 12sts in black). That is when you come to a grey no stitch box, skip it. Keep skipping the grey boxes until you come to a black box.
If you look up to row 14 you’ll see that all the greyed out boxes have disappeared. This is due to the increases that are worked on row 2,4,6,8,10,12 and 14. Now you will have enough sts on your needles to work across the chart from stitch 1 to stitch 16 on each needle.
Can this be done with a circular needle
K so when I co 12 stitches and distribute it’s on 4 dpns so my first 3 st on needle 1 , I knit one and the other 2 sts do I slip , slip and than go to needle 2 and slip,slip slip 4,5,6 , needle 3 /slip knit, slip and so on
I do colorwork on circs using magic loop. If you have appropriate needles you probably can use a circ or two circs. The rest I can’t answer.
You can use magic loop as GG suggested or two circular needles or flexi flips. The number of sts at the beginning is too few for a single circular and that’s why the pattern is suggesting dpns.
On round 1, knit stitch one, then knit the next two sts. That’s the 3sts on needle 1. Go to needle 2 and knit the 3sts on needle two. Proceed to needle 3 and knit those three sts and do the same for needle 4.
One the next round you’ll still have 3sts on each needle. K2, increase as the pattern suggests, k1. Do the same sequence for needles 2,3 and 4. You’ll have 16sts total, 4 on each needle.
Try working it step by step. See if you can work those two rounds and if you need help, just come back and ask. You can do this and it’s actually going to be fun!
Excellent! Looking good so far. Round 3 is knit all sts around. Round 4 is then k1,increase, k2, increase and then k1. This sequence is repeated on each needle.
In thinking about showing sts for a ball in a flat chart it’s like projecting the true sizes of countries on a flat page. The red arrows mark the equivalent of the “no stitch” boxes.
