Hi can anyone recommend a tutorial for knitting two stranded colurwork flat. currently on yhe knit side i,m using two hands with one colour in each … throwing with my right and picking with left . For purling I,m doing the same. My issue is the picked knit stitches present as twisted and I,m not sure if I work into tje front or back if these stitches . On tje work some of these stitches sort of disappeare into the fabric even though I,m holding the yearn consistently for colour dominance. Thank uou .
It may help to slowly watch each knit stitch to see if you are knitting into the back loop of the stitch or possibly wrapping the yarn clockwise around the needle when you pick. Either will twist the knit stitch.
Here’s a video that helped me with stranded colorwork especially on the purl side.
If you always bring the contrast color over the main color and bring the main color from under the contrast color when you change colors, the yarn won’t twist and tangle.
The disappearing stitches may be due to tension difference, those stitches may be smaller due to being tighter, I find this a little with my picking hand as I am less comfortable with picking and also I always feel the method just pulls on that yarn in the way it is picked rather than wrapped, whereas my throwing hand wraps with the right amount of yarn. Maybe practise several rows with your less dominant hand to get more use to the tension? Also make sure the floats aren’t tight, tight floats will make your stitch smaller and it will sink in or disappear.
As salmonmac said, it’s a good idea to find out why your stitches are twisted, maybe wrapping or picking in the wrong direction which is easy to resolve.
I hold in yarn in both hands for knit and purl sides and always work flat. I’ll see if I can find a video of the purl side.
Edited to add. I can’t find a video anywhere which shows the method I use to purl with my left hand (unusual method with very little movement involved). Which side of the fabric are you producing the twisted stitches? And which hand is producing them? I’m not sure from your post if your knit or purl stitches are being made twisted. Are you perhaps working combination using the Norwegian purl stitch in your left hand? This should be worked into the back loop on the knit side.
Thank you for your advice . I,ve decided to knit a couple of practice swatches to see of i can improve my technique.
Thank you . I,ve decided to put the sweater on hold and knit some pot holder swatches to practice my technique .
I found this video that helped me in which direction to wrap the yarn when purling on the right side. The stitches did not seem to be twisted
