hi realy stupid question but i havent knited in forever do i change colour on a k or a p line?

Change it on the knit row so the odd color is on the WS.

You can change on either row. If you are on the purl side just purl the row with the new color, and if you are on a knit side knit with the new color. It works either way. Most patterns that you come across though will have the change on a knit row.
