This is my first post althought I have been lurking for quite a while. The Clapotis has gotten me wanting to pick up my needles again but now I am stuck. I read through all of the other posts with questions for the Clapotis but I couldn’t find one that answered mine. I must be the only one that does not understand this!
After Row 4 there is a Note which states “From this point forward throught the whole pattern, on even-numbered rows, you will always be knitting the st before the marker through the back loop, knitting the stitch after the marker through the front as normal, then the next st through the back loop…”
But at this point I have only placed one marker and that was on Row 2. And from what I can tell I do not place another marker until Row 14. Is this only referring to rows where I place a marker or am I looking down my knitting to where my marker is? Does this make sense?
Also in section 2 even rows 2-10 refer to the “last marker”. Is this the marker that I put in on Row 14?
I am sorry for my stupid questions but I have no clue.
Don’t overthink the Clapotis. It really is an easy pattern.
As you knit on the Clapotis you will be adding markers until you have about 18 of them (gosh, I think that’s how many there were, it’s been awhile since I finished mine) across your needle.
At each of these markers you will follow the same pattern: knit the st before the marker through the back loop, knit the stitch after the marker through the front as normal, then the next st through the back loop. This will start making much more sense once you start adding markers.
And yes, you don’t add another marker until row 14.
You will knit the st before the marker through the back loop, knit the stitch after the marker through the front as normal, then the next st through the back loop as you reach each marker on every knit row starting on row 4.
In section 2 it refers to the last marker on the needle as you knit. Since you repeat this section many times by the time you are finished with all the repeats of this section there are many more markers on the needle. So the last marker is the last marker you come to as you knit to the end of your row.
As you start knitting the Clapotis the pattern will reveal itself to you and make much more sense.
In the words of Ingrid the Wise, “Trust the pattern!”
It means to knit those sts through the back loop on every knit row. You don’t leave the marker on row 2, or row 14; they follow your knitting. The stitch marker stays on the needles, slip from one to the other when you come to it, and you’ll know which sts to ktbl.
