Circular needles question - switching to dpns?

I thought this might be a good advanced beginner pattern to try with circular needles. My question is about the dpns…

In this pattern, when it says “start the decreases” does that mean I switch to the dpns? Any helpful tips would be appreciated! - bethie

Directions
With the circular needle, cast on 70 sts.

Join, being careful not to twist

  • K1, P1 * repeat to end of row.

Work previous row for 3 more rows.

K every round until hat measures 5.5 inches from cast on edge.
Start the Decreases

K 2 k 2 tog repeat to end of row.

Knit 5 rows

K 2 k 2 tog repeat to end of row.

Knit 3 rows.

K 1, k 2 tog repeat to end of row.

Knit 2 rows.

K 2 tog repeat to end of row.

Break yarn, and using a darning needle, gather remaining stitches. Weave in end of yarn.

 You switch to your dpns when you no longer have enough yarn on your circ to go around it
