I just started knitting this week, and I really cannot use flat needles! They are too large for me and I can’t control them, so for my first project I made one of the grandma’s favorite dishcloths, and used circular needles.
Problem was, I either knit too tight (as I suspect) or I am not supposed to use circ’s for all knitting maybe?
My dishcloth turned into a curved boat shape, lol. I really don’t think I can use large needles, so is my problem the circ’s or am I knitting too tight and I should just try with a larger size? I just followed the directions on the yarn label that said to use 4.5-5 needles, so I only have 4.5’s…
I use circs instead of straights for everything, so it’s not that. Are you sure you followed the pattern correctly? Even if you knit tight, it should still be the right shape–just a bit smaller.
Well, I looks to me like the part where I got to 44 stitches across (middle of the pattern, just before you start decreasing) is longer than the opposite diagonal, and so it curved. I know I followed the pattern though- it was curving from the very beginning, but I thought it was something to do with the needles.
The only trouble i had was in the ending- it says to keep decreasing till you have just 4 stitches, but I was trying to still do the knit 2 together, YO, Knit 2 together, knit one, at the end of each row-- except it didn’t seem to quite work out. So i kind of just kept going and made up a few— that has nothing to do with the curving however, since that is the end of it.
I got it wet, and pinned it flat to dry, just to see what happens. I think I will start on another and se how it goes…
Aren’t I supposed to add stitches? All I did was, at the start of each row I knit two, yarn over, knit across.
Then when I got 44 stitches, I knit 1, knit 2 together, YO, knit 2 together and knit to end of row-- except when there were 5 stitches left on the needle (at the end of each row) I would reverse the beginning and knit 2 together, YO, Knit 2 together, knit 1. Was that it??

I didn’t understand that it was a diagonal pattern. I thought maybe you may have increased more than you should have.

Could be. I know this pattern and if you decreased on both ends of the row, that’s wrong. You inc at the beginning of each row until you get 44 sts, then you dec at the beginning of each row until you have 5 stitches left total, then bind those off.
