Christening Gown

first off, on codine right now…so forgive the mistakes…of ALL kinds…:slight_smile:

Ok…my gf wants MEEEEEEEEEe to make the Christening gown. :slight_smile: She’s picked out the pattern, AND The yarn…the yarn…ICK BLECK YUCK. But SHE likes it…Ok, I’m the Godmama…do I just suck up and make it work???

OR… tell her (which IS really the truth anyway) that the yarn called for is a fingering weight yarn, and just pick out something that is MUCH better??? Still in the bright white? And if that is the case…what would be best for a gown in a fingering weight yarn? It calls for size 3 and 5 needles…Not too terribly sure that the Patons is a quality yarn. I was thinking cotton…??? He will most likely be a premie baptized in the hopital, adn this will be for a church service dedication…

The pattern has a hat, gown and booties, that are SOOOOO beautiful…

my mother sure would think so…

the gown is beautiful, and out of a book I gave to her to pick from. I am going to make the cover sweater, and told her I’d make her what ever else she wanted…and she picked that. I was tickled, as she has two boys, and wasn’t sure if there was a communal gown, or if each had their own, adn I don’t feel it is something you can ask TO make??? does that make sense??

I have this never ending poncho…working on the end of the 3rd skein, have the 4th to go before it’s over, a pair of socks, the quilt for the girl scout leader (I however, am giving myself 2 weeks for that from start to finish) and THEN I can start it. I am SOOOO trying to be monogomous when I knit…but it just doesn’t seem to be working!!!

So…who makes a good cotton? Cost isn’t really a matter…really…(much??)…nah…I dont’ want to worry about it.

What kind of yarn did she choose? If it’s not fingering weight as the pattern recommends it may affect the gauge and look of the finished gown. I think you should at least point that out.

I have a terrible time finding nice fingering weight yarn.
(But I don’t shop on line. I gotta feel it first.)
Caron’s or Coat’s just doesn’t cut it with me. There’s a couple other brands that I can’t even remember the name, I hated 'em so much.

I’ve used Sinfonia cotton (Hobby Lobby) and it was pretty nice to work with. It’s a little bit thicker than DK. The lable calls for size 4 US needles, but it doesn’t give a recommended gauge. :doh:

A friend from the UK brought me some yarn from 'cross the pond, and I have used the Patons Fairytale, 3ply fingering weight.
It was made in Scottland. :heart: I loved it!

Currently I’m knitting with a worsted weight Patons yarn that is “okay”. I’m not doing cartwheels over it, but I don’t hate it. It’s made in Canada.

Definately check the recommended gauge on the yarn against the pattern. That might be your “out” with her yarn selection. [/color]

Have you thought about Cashmerino?? If I had to knit a christening gown it would be my first choice. Wonderfully soft, a dream to knit with, comes in four different weights (baby weight here), luxurious but still machine washable, and most importantly, not outrageously expensive. I mean, yeah, more than Patons, but if this is going to be a family heirloom… :wink:

Lana:Here is a close pattern. My nana made this for Rachel when she was born. Not exactly like it but very close…anybody have an idea for the name of this? it has a 12 repeat pattern, am I CRAZY???

Jan: Bernat Baby in sport weight is what she picked. She’s making the christening blanket out of it, and it has this thread going through to give it an extra shine. Just SOOOO not my taste

…and I am afraid of acrylic holding up through the years…anything I need to think of with the natural fibers and family heirlooms?

The new pompador yarns no long have a rayon wrap. It’s OLEFIN! The same fiber they make Berber carpeting from. :rollseyes:

I also want to do the gown from the top down, but I just don’t see how that will work. :frowning: I’m not THAT experienced yet to go messin with patterns. So I’ll do as is…and ohhhh goodie…I get new needles!!! rofl…:slight_smile: :cheering: :cheering:

I think that I’ll look…I don’t LOVE the neck/yoke either…it is garter stitch, and just eh…the rest is purdy tho…

it’s just constructed funky…

first the back, up to the yoke part
then the front
then the sleeves
then you go back and add the yoke back, then the yoke front, then I think you put the sleeves on…just seems like a lot of back and forth work when the whole thing could be done top down, all at once!!! lol…

we are hoping that the baby will stay put for another 7 week, but more than likely will be there for 4, and then will be in NICU for a good 3-4 weeks, but with the quilt project…not MUCH time…but at least it will be little eh?
