Has anyone knit a replica of “Wednesday Addams” checkerboard vest. I find lots of crochet but not many knitted ones and the ones I did find were adult size. I would need a child pattern for a smaller 10y.o.
Checkerboard
Can you link to an example, even crocheted, please. We might be able to find a pattern or how to adapt a pattern for what you want.
I’d find a pattern in the appropriate size and work out how to do the intarsia squares. Someone else might have a better idea and/or can help with the math to make a basic pattern work for you.
Hello
Like GG said , using a kids plain v-neck vest and calculating the intarsia would probably be the best option.
I don’t know what weight yarn you wanted but in this example the gauge is 17 sts nd 22 rows, the stitch count for age 9/10 is:
136 in the round
136÷ 2 = 68 sts front, 68 sts back
Intarsia is best knit flat so cast on 68 + 2 selvedge sts for seaming, colour block between the selvedge.
68÷17 = 4 squares across front (as per your image)
Length on this is 43cm excluding the rib, I would make this 45cm, a little longer (which makes it last longer too and the child grows) which means 4 full squares in height plus half a square at the shoulder where front and back are seamed.
The row gauge is 22 rows per 10cm but if your row gauge was different you’d just work to 10cm to create the square.
Markers will indicate the colour block changes.
The pattern has no increases through the body, working flat only change the stitch count by 2 for seaming and once you get to the armholes the piece is worked separately anyway.
I would check what approach to take front and back neck on the rib band. The pattern has a central stitch on the neck band that you don’t want, you want 2 distinct sides. This must be an easy answer for someone more experienced than me.
Here’s the sample pattern
Hope this helps
