Chantal roll neck sweater - matching front and back

Hi everyone. I’m knitting the Chantal roll neck sweater

Knitting pattern Chantal Sweater Chunky – Morecaknit Knitting Patterns Store .

It’s knit top down. The pattern says to knit 36 rows at the back - but 50 at the front - before joining the two under the arms. Can this be right? It puts the shoulder seam not on the top of the shoulder but about 6 cm back down the back.

Welcome to KH!

The projects on Ravelry have the saddle shoulder pretty much at the top of the shoulder. Can you quote the sections about the rows for back and front? Just give us a small portion of the pattern please due to designer copyright.

Hi and thanks for taking a look. It’s hard to quote from the pattern as the relevant parts are not all together. However - the back is worked top down with 16 rows of shaping with Germans short rows, then 16 more w no shaping. TOTAL 36 rows

The front sides are worked separately - left & right sides - 35 rows each. THEN they are joined with cast on stitches across the center to complete the whole front. At this stage front and back are roughly the same length. BUT the instructions say to carry on knitting 50 more rows

before joining front to back under the arms. It seems odd.

Though the resulting arm hole would be roughly the right size. What do you think?

I could attach a pdf of the pattern. Is that permitted?

BTW this is not the Chantal with saddle shoulders. There are several styles. This is a straight shoulder seam. I have attached a picture.

I found a different listing on Ravelry for what seems to be the same pattern. This is a link to a project page. I scrolled down to (I think) the 9th and 10th photos. To me it looks like the shoulder seam would be behind the top of the shoulder. It doesn’t look like a saddle shoulder to me.

Thank you for that link! Yes, it does look like the shoulder seam ends up behind the top of the shoulder. So reassuring - indicates I have read the pattern correctly, odd as it seemed. Onward!

Am so grateful for your advice.

I just gave you info to help you see whether it appears right or not. You’re welcome for any help I can give. I’d already found the pattern on Ravelry then saw salmonmac’s link and realized they were different. Different pages, different photos. I think we got lucky!

So often, I wish the designer would take fewer “fashionable” photos, and take more that would be helpful. Like in this case, a straightforward back view would have answered your question right away.

I couldn’t agree more. Thank goodness for knitters who document every step and then post. (Note to self - do this more often.)

I was thinking the same thing when looking for project photos!
