Channel Island Cast On Question

Hi there everyone. I was wondering if someone who is experience with the channel island cast on could give me some advice. I’m using a channel island cast on to begin a cuff down sock pattern, and I’ve used it once before, so I’m familiar with the mechanics of the technique. However, the last time I used it, it was for a 1x1 rib and I didn’t have to modify it all. This time, I’m going to be doing a 3x3 rib for the cuff, and am not sure how/if I need to modify the cast on so that it flows into the rib pattern. If anyone has suggestions or tips, they would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I’m not sure what you should do. I have only used the Channel Island cast-on with garter stitch. But I looked up what it says about them in my book Knitting Ganseys and Beth Brown-Reinsel says, “If you use this cast-on with ribbing, however, take care to center the knit stitches over the bead, or the bead will recede into the fabric along with the purl stitches.”

That advice will work with the K1, P1 ribbing you did before but won’t work for this case. You could just try it and see if you like it okay on the 3X3 rib. I don’t think there is any way you can make the beads 3 in a row and then skip 3 and still be doing a regular Channel Island cast-on. If you don’t like the Channel Island on the 3X3 you can choose a new cast-on.

Maybe as the sock is worn (with the cast-on stretched a bit) the problem Beth mentioned won’t be an issue.

Well, I don’t know much about it other than since it’s a cast on you’re getting one stitch each time. If you are wanting the picot/scallop to go across three stitches… don’t know if you can do it that way. Hopefully someone else will know. I know Of Troy knows a lot about it.

I know that ofTroy knows this CO. Try PMing her…
