I am knitting an afgan that has a border all the way around. The border color on the sides of the afgan is 10 stitches, then the main color and then border color for 10 stitches. Will I need to cut the border color each row and how do I make it look even all the way around. Would I need to knit the border seperately and then somehow put it together with the central body of the afgan? I am really confused as to how this works and the pattern does not give any instructions as to how to do this. Please help. Thank you.
If the border is knit right on as you go you will need to do intarsia for the border. That would mean you work the 10 border stitches with the border color then leave that color there and start working with the main color. Work across to the second border and drop the MC there and start a new ball of the contrast color. Then when you work back you drop the border color and pick up the MC, work across and drop the MC and pick up the CC for the border and keep working like that. The thing you need to remember is that you will always pick up the new color, at each change, from underneath the color you are dropping, this caused the yarns to twist around each other. If you don’t do that you will have an open space between the two colors, they will only be side by side, but not connected. There is a video about intarsia on this site. I believe it is listed under “advanced techniques”. A gal here made a couple of blankets with not only intarsia borders, but squares of color as well. I might try to find that thread for you.
This is a link to the second page of posts about her blankets. On this page she has some links to pictures of one of her blankets including pictures of how the back looks. The users name is “flipoid”.
Thank you for your help. I understand now about the yarns and separating them for the border. I have worked on the afgan and the border that( for the sake of trying to explain this psoblem) is the right side, and on the right side of the afgan, works well using the intarsia method and gives me a nice chrisp line between the border and the main part of the afgan. BUT when I get to the other end, ie, the left side of the afgan, and again on the right side of the afgan where I have to do the purl stitch, does not give me the same chrisp line as on the right side. How do I twist the yarns to get the same chrisp line as I get when using the knit stitch.
What stitch is the main body of the afghan in? And what stitch is the border in? I’m trying to see exactly what the problem is. At the end of RS rows what is the last st of the body and the first stitch of the border?
The afgan is stitched as follows: the border is done in navy blue and a purl stitch, the body of the afgan is done in a red white blue and a knit stitch, so I start the row in navy and a purl, go to knit in red, white blue , then end in purl with the navy.
I hope this explains it, if not please try your question again.
You purl every row of the border? That would make garter stitch, but most people do that by knitting every row. :?? If you knitted every row you’d get garter stitch for the center too. Maybe you mean you are doing stockinette in the center, knit a row, purl a row? On the edge I’m not sure what you might mean… but you could mean it is garter everywhere.
Border is always blue and center first stitch that touches the border could be red, white, or blue? A helpful thing would be a picture. Could you direct me to one, or could you give me the full name of the pattern and who it is by and maybe I can find a picture of it on the internet to look at?
I’m sorry. I couldn’t sleep last night and went to bed after 6 AM and am just getting going again.
