changing yardn mid row

Hi: having trouble with something that should be simple. Need to change yarn/color mid row. Struggling with the color change without leaving holes. Would love some suggestions…
Thanks!

What pattern are you working on? Are you knitting intarsia?

There are several different ways of working these new yarn strands into a row. With the same color yarn you can overlap the two strands for a single stitch. Yes, it’s a double thickness but unnoticeable in the knit fabric.
Another way that works with two different colors is to drop color 1 and begin knitting with color 2. When it comes time to weave in the ends, be sure to cross the strands before weaving in. You can check this from the front of the piece. Not crossing strands leaves a hole, the crossed strands close the hole.

When i have 2 tails (old and new balls) i look for the exact place the first tail comes from and weave the second tail into there for the first weave/stitch. Then look where the exact place the second tail came from and weave the first tail into there for the first weave/stitch.
I like to use a kind of duplicate stitch on the wrong side to weave in, it is stretchy and usually invisible, it’s the very first place you weave those two tails that makes them cross, making each follow the direction of travel for at least the first stitch.
I had exactly this question a couple of years ago.

If you are changing colour for intarsia you need to cross the strands at each change, there will be a bit of a gap until you come back on the next row to lock it in. As you get to the place where you need to switch to a colour that has already been used and is waiting (not a new ball) drop the old colour over the new colour, this locks the new colour behind the old colour. You may need to snug up the yarn as you work the join.

Ok - thank you! I think it is the act of dropping the old colour over the new colour, and I guess i am overthinking it!

Hi: Yes, it is the crossing strands thing - I guess it need to do it a certain way on RS and a different way on WS. That is part of the confusion…!

Hi: Yes, it is for intarsia, just realized I need to do the old colour over the new colour diferently for WS vs RS. Thank you

Yes - a simple form of intarsia.

This is one way to twist the yarns when working intarsia.

Stacey brings the old yarn over the new yarn and to the left. That works on both the RS and WS.
