I have a pattern, yarn (worsted weight) and just tonight realized the pattern is calling for sport weight. Is it possible to still use this yarn? Can I just change needle sizes and make it work? Thanks!
What are you making? Using smaller needles will sometimes work, but only at the expense of making up a thicker fabric, which will affect the drape, hand, and thickness of the finished product.
So if it’s a dishcloth, no problem.
If it’s an article of clothing, you may run into problems.
You might be able to make a smaller size of the pattern if it’s a hat or sweater. Knit a sample of the yarn with the right needles for it and see how many sts you get. Then multiply that times the inches you need. See if one of the smaller sizes is close to that number of stitches and go by it, but adjust the length.
If it’s a scarf or something, just CO less stitches.
It’s a top so I guess my only choice is to try a sample and see what happens. The yarn is bamboo if that makes any difference. Thanks for your help.
Sport to Worsted weight is two steps up in size so it’s a pretty big difference. You should always do a gauge swatch anyway.
