sometimes a cast on makes a difference–sometimes a designer or pattern will call for the cast on the designer used. VERY Frequently, you can substitute a different cast.

BUT the knit cast on is a good one to know… and not too hard…

(I am a cast on queen–i know 40 plus cast on’s!
see a 5 part blog series on cast on starting here.
links to next part at end of each post)

Still, even though i know many cast on’s, I USE Long tail or a variation of LONG TAIL (norwegian long tail, 2 color long tail, etc) more than 50% of the time…

(i rarely use the knit cast on… i don’t like it… but you aren’t me, and you might love it! Try it, why don’t you?!)

How do you cast on right in the middle of your knitting if you’re on the purl side? I am making a miniature sweater where I knit 10, cast off 10 for the neck, knit 10, turn, purl 10, cast on 10, purl 10. I’m stuck on how to cast on purlwise. Can you help me?

here are a few ways

1–use a Knit cast on…(style of cast on)
only Purl! its a little strange/awkward at first but you can Purl a caston

2–use a cable, or simple cast on. (the cable cast on can be done “purl wise” too)

3–turn work, Use a Knit or Cable or Simple cast on, turn work and continue.

You don’t have to always, but some patterns may specify one CO or another because of the way it behaves. I’ve found that entrelac or modular knitting needs to use a knit co so it has a lot of give to that edge.
