yarn round left thumb, needle in right. I always just guesstimate the length of tail for number of stitches and sometimes I have to start again and sometimes I have way too much. Does anyone know of a more ‘scientific’ way to gauge length???:knitting: :
The thumb loop cast on is great for getting loops over the needle and letting you get started but it’s a difficult cast on to knit into on the next row. There are some better ones on this page including the knit cast on which uses the knit stitch which you probably already know.

For the thumb method, you can hold about 6 inches of yarn tail in the right hand with the needle and use the working yarn for the cast on (same goes for the knit cast on). That way you don’t have to estimate how much yarn you’ll need the way you would with a long tail cast on.
Once again you have given good advice. I have only ever used thumb cast on method taught by my Mum very many years ago.
I will be sure to watch some of the videos with interest.
